After several years in exile, and after fruitless attempts by services assuring me they could secure the expiring domain for a mere $99, thenickatoms.com is now back where it belongs: in our hands. The domain will simply forward to the .org domain for the time being until we decide if a change to .com as the main domain is warranted.

There’s a new play coming to town called Robots Vs. Fake Robots, and there’s something familiar about it:

This is purely coincidence as far as we know. It’s possible the artist drew inspiration from images of Coburn, but we have no knowledge if that is the case.

Visit Walking Shadow Theatre Company for more information.

Episode #041 of Paul and Storm Talk About Some Stuff for Five to Ten Minutes (On Average) alerted me to the fact that there is a version of “Land of the Lost” by 90s alternative rock stalwarts Everclear. It dates from their 2008 album, The Vegas Years, and it is quite different from the dozen or so versions The Nick Atoms conjured over the years.

Now, your Dr. Ted Nelson is a fan of Everclear, so this version sounds pleasing to his ears; your mileage may vary. Give us your thoughts on this version of the song, and weigh in on [manufactured controversy] the snubbing of The Nick Atoms for inclusion on the film soundtrack for the upcoming summer blockbuster, Land of the Lost. The Nick Atoms

The world’s greatest Sci-Fi band, The Nick Atoms, will finally receive the key to the city and the highest honor given to bands that are cool, but will never be famous: MUSICAL GUEST OF HONOR at the 2010 MARSCON in Bloomington, MN on March 5-7 in 2010.

This historic decision, from Dementia co-chair the great Luke Ski, was made after The Nick Atoms — Dr Ted Nelson and his two robots, Coburn and Wyngarde — returned from an adventure that had them labeled missing and presumed dead for the last five years. Dr. Ted returned from an alternate universe and rescued his amazing creations from the evil hands of Euro-synth-artist-musician-poet-astroprojectionist-painter-writer-nutritionist known as “Hot Snack Time“.

The trio has decided to put an end to the music but will be giving ONE LAST CONCERT of truly extra-ordinary proportions. You can see their reunion concert to say farewell at MarsCon where, if you have been reading and paying attention, they will be the MUSICAL GUEST OF HONOR at the 2010 MARSCON.

For many, this will be a first time to see the robotic rockers, and for others, a trip down memory lane. The Nick Atoms are excited by this development!

Many other bands and musicians will be at MarsCons 2010 — including Throwing Toasters and Nuclear Bubble Wrap — to celebrate the return of The Nick Atoms.

Rolling Stone magazine stated, “Not since John Lennon was shot has the world been so saddened as when The Nick Atoms vanished. It is so cool that people will get to see a The Nick Atoms concert. DO NOT MISS THIS! We will be getting our

badges for MarsCon 2010 early. This is the music event of 2010, people!”

This is the first award given to the Sci-Fi super group. Hot Snack Time remains missing and at large.

In October 2005, fresh off the WB appearance high, The Nick Atoms rounded up two more bands from the show to play O’Gara’s Garage in St. Paul.

The Rice Channel bailed on us, but Johnny Trash came through with flying colors and opened our show.  We had a great time and played a whole lot of obscure songs that we never played at MarsCon.

One of our favorites was a cover of “Drink Till I Die” from Bad News (aka: The Young Ones).  Here’s The Nick Atoms pounding away complete with “rockstar fog”!

Enjoy!

Back in 2001, our first official full concert was at CONvergence (we played MarsCon a few months earlier as a kind of warm up).  CONvergence was the main reason why the band was formed.

We wanted to make this concert HUGE.  I think we played for an hour and a half.  We rehearsed nonstop.  We promoted the HELL out of the show.  12:00 MIDNIGHT!  We hung dozens of fliers up all over the hotel.

Around 11:30pm we got word that our show was being bumped in favor of anther band.  At midnight, the mainstage was PACKED from all the publicity we drummed up around the hotel, but instead of The Nick Atoms, they got “Ear Candy”:  Two girls dressed up like Devo, playing techno dance music on a keyboard.  (hrmmm… sounds familiar)

We finally got on stage about 1:00am and prepared to kick all ass.  The audience was very receptive as we closed the show with our most complicated number to date.  A song that I dont think we could ever tackle again…

The entire end credit music to Star Wars(1977).

Enjoy.

Back in 2006, VH1’s “I Love Toys” series featured a little sketch entitled “Cobra Commanders Day Off” which sampled a very familiar song.

Did we get recognition for it?  No.

Do we care?  Well, considering how obscure it was, it probably wouldn’t have mattered.

Witness our 40 second anonymous stardom on our video page!

With a generous grant from The Nick Atoms Historical Society, we were able to excavate footage from one of the first rehearsals from the band.  This was pre costumes and concept, with just two songs under our belt (both Krofft songs).

Filmed in the fall of 2000, this footage is further proof that we did actually practice together on a regular basis.  We were no strangers to rehearsing twice a week, sometimes six hours a day.  Of course, there was always the obligatory "White Castle" break where we brainstormed some impossible-to-execute ideas for our shows.

Enjoy!

Several people have downloaded all of the tracks available on our Music page. We like to call those people “early adopters.” Those folks are blazing the trail for the rest of you casual diners to follow.

To make the hording of quality The Nick Atoms tunes a little bit easier, we have added complete albums for download. Yes, now you can click once to have all of that album’s tracks downloaded in one file. It couldn’t be easier.

The Nick Atoms

Today we officially launch the new The Nick Atoms Historical Society website. This new site will serve as a repository for all of the artifacts we can dig up regarding the band that is, and was, The Nick Atoms. Our goal is to document as much of our history as we can muster, because our fans, new and old, deserve as much.

The site launches with a metric ton of media content. Here are some examples of what we have in store:

Music: We are offering up all of the music from our four CD releases in an interactive streaming playlist. But that's not all! Every track is available for download, free of charge. We plan to add more musical content in the coming months, including rarities, bootlegs, live recordings, and other previously unreleased tracks. Our goal is to give you as much of our music as we can find.

Video: Several YouTube videos are aggregated on the video page. There is much more to come. Coburn has been scouring the video archives for choice nuggets of archival footage to share with our fans. There are also discussions about producing new video content.

Photos: All of the photo sets from the original TNA website are available again! These will be supplemented with new photo sets from our past appearances, and the existing sets will be expanded with photos never before seen outside of Dr. Ted Nelson's study.

New content will be added regularly to the site. We have plans for an art gallery which will include original artwork and show posters. An expanded history -- both fictional and actual -- could be in the offing.

We hope that you will stop by often to see what we are up to.

The Nick Atoms
14 October 2005 @ 05:59 pm
For those of you that attended the O'Gara's show, consider yourselves privileged. That was the last show of the robot band known as THE NICK ATOMS.

It is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to Coburn, who is off to greener pastures. While the departure is sudden and unexpected, we understand and wish him well.

As for Dr. Ted Nelson and Wyngarde, they will be resting for an undecided amount of time.

We thank all the people who have written to us, come to our shows, talked with us, sent us stuff, and so on. To friends and family who helped us reach for the heights we did: you were an inspiration to us all.

We also thank the people who helped out with the many behind-the-scenes emergencies. You saved us many times.

We thank the 70s for coming up with the best damn theme songs to play with, and we thank lawyers for not suing the crap out of us. Also thanks to William Shatner for inspiring us with his unique way of seeing things.

We also thank all the people we have worked with over the years, from the small cameo to the big Dementia Smackdown. To all the other music makers and adventure seekers, the Mid-Nite Movie hosts, the people trying to do their own thing, and all the conventions and comic book stores that had us over for a spell: you filled us with creativity and we have been honored to work with you.

The Nick Atoms did have a very full career. We were on the radio. We had shows from bars to conventions. We even played a wedding. We were on TV and were voted second place by music professionals and first place by you, our loyal fans. We had a short lived comic. We served breakfast and educational films. We scored short films and even had a cameo in one while making our own little bits. We did convention panels. We even met Dr. Demento and worked with many celebrities...sort of.

Raid the website while you can, it may not be up for much longer.

While The Nick Atoms may not be bringing music to your ears, you may not have heard the last of The Nick Atoms. It may return in one form or another. For now, we are sorry to say there are no plans and there is nothing in the works -- not even an idea, just quiet sleep.

We hope The Nick Atoms have helped you to hear things in a new way, to see things differently and most importantly, to have a good laugh at the world, others, and yourselves. We hoped we have made your lives better in some way.

We will miss you all and thank you for an amazing five years.

So long and thanks for all the fish…
